Today, I’ll jump straight into it:
According to the 2024 Gentworth and CareScout survey, the cost for “hands-off” and “hands-on” home aides is merging with a median salary of $75k+ and $77K+, respectively.
Assuming 53 pay periods per year and a 40-hour week, those salaries = $35-$36 per hour.
Hmm, now that I write that I don’t know why I the survey surprised me because those rates are essentially what I found last month when looking into the possibility of hiring a “hands-of” companion for my mom now that I’m not living with her. Anyway…
Earlier this week, I cried hard when looking for a part-time job:
The prospect of getting paid $17.50/hr to take on a dizzying list of duties—that would take more mental and physical energy than I’m willing to divert away from my village work—was more than my heart could stand.
Then, I had a thought: to apply as a companion with Naborforce.
Naborforce is a company that connects older adults to paid “hands-off” helpers—including students and retirees—in their own community.
I expect to be hired and am looking forward to assisting people with things like organizing their closets (which my mom LOVED when I did it for her).
I wish I were financially able to do household tasks for ailing or aging neighbors for free like I did when I had paying jobs, but I’m not right now. So I take solace in knowing that, pending getting hired, I’ll be filling pressing needs.
And for that, I should not regret getting paid.
HOWEVER, …I’d love to see neighbors helping neighbors with everyday tasks sometimes without the exchange of cash as a normal part of living life.
We’ll get there. Until then, …
CareYaya is a company that connects older adults to healthcare students for “hands-off” help from $17-30/hr.
I’ll end this short & sweet offering with a link to CareScout, where you can find care, learn about the costs of care and more.
